TAIPEI, Jan 22 — Taiwan's government ordered a tightening of controls on Saturday after a rare spike in domestic transmission of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, saying it needed to act now to prevent being overwhelmed even though overall numbers remain quite low.

TAIPEI, Jan 19 — Covid-19 airport testing rules requiring passengers arriving in Taiwan on long-haul flights to wait for the result of their Covid-19 PCR tests at the airport will be expanded to short-haul arrivals from India and eight Southeast Asian countries starting Thursday, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung announced Wednesday.
